Hi all!

Firstly I would to again – thank DFFB for the weekend that I was lucky enough to attend. Great to meet you and sorry I didn’t get to chat with all the interesting characters that went. It was a great experience and highlights exciting prospects for the charity and the survivors it aims to help. It was great to learn in detail the ways in which the charity works and how that has already benefitted me so much already as a recent burn survivor. I sense the hard work carried out has catalysed a great motion which is going to massively improve the availability of care within the NHS and outside of it swell.

If you went to the weekend you will remember me by the talk I did about my experience at the Katie Piper foundation rehabilitation centre (which I am currently at until Friday this week). I touched on the support i’d been receiving there – Laser treatment, LPG machine (like a fancy skin hoover massager for scars) extensive physio, personal training, complimentary therapies, outdoor & indoor fun excursions, laser treatment, steroid injections, Tai chi, yoga, the list goes on…

It might not for everyone, but it is all paid for by the charity and it is tailored to suit you as an individual; catering for your unique emotional and physical needs. They are very good at doing this and seemed to have developed a great system in working out what would be good for the people in need.

A few months ago I was struggling and was in a lot of pain with my injures, I am still recovering but my condition has significantly improved. Especially whilst at the rehab centre. I would definitely recommend it. DFFB have shown great support for me trying to spread awareness of this, proving their role as great umbrella charity and resources available in the UK for those in need. I wanted to open up this thread as a space for people to ask me anything they would like about my experience here and I will do my best to answer. If I feel like I do not know something I will say. If it is this week then I might be able to ask at the centre and report back, as I’m sure there might be some questions. Also some of you might have already attended the rehab centre and have experiences or insight you may have.

I will also be on the live chat this Wednesday if anyone has any questions.

Much love 🙂

Josh

Josh – that sounds amazing and thank you for adding a bit to what we heard about at the weekend – I am definitely keen to hear more about it and I am sure other burn survivors are too… I hope this week goes well for you and it was so great to meet you and April at the weekend… I will be on the chat on Wed and will ask more questions then… Polly

Hi Baloo,

I’m part of the Adult Burn Support UK Admin Team.  Regarding the KPF Rehabilitation Centre, if you click the ‘Get Help’ tab on the homepage of Katie Piper Foundation Website, you can select ‘our services – Rehabilitation Centre’ and that page gives you all the information you’re looking for including who to contact.

Josh, it was amazing to meet you and April.  Just a shame we didn’t have the time to chat more…think we would need weeks instead of hours…lol.

Chris and I gained SO much from the DFFB weekend.  We also had a LOT of laughs.

Thank you for sharing…you truly are amazing.

Take care for now.

Hi there,

I sustained full thickness burns to 20% of my body (neck, chest and both arms) in August 2019, and was hospitalized for almost 9 weeks at the Northern General. I am now under the care of the Burns Unit at the same hospital (at least for the next 2 years or so). My grafts have healed well so far, but there is still much work to be done, especially with regards to pain management. I have contacted the Katie Piper foundation and have been informed that I will need a referral from the ward to be considered for rehabilitation. I last visited the burns unit last week and spoke to the physios and they told me that I should first, carry on engaging with them, before I consider the Katie Piper rehab clinic. My worry is that, if I allow too much time to pass, I may not be given the opportunity to rehabilitate at the Katie Piper rehab clinic. Does anybody have any advice for me?

Hi Green Destiny Wolf,

I’m part of the admin team at Adult Burn Support UK.  I believe each case is considered individually and they have had individuals at the Rehab Centre who were burned years ago as well as some who were burned 12-18 months ago.  My suggestion would be to contact their ‘Head of Clinical’ Krissie whose contact details can be found on the KPF website under the ‘Get Help – Our Services Rehabilitation Centre’ page; her contact number is listed at the bottom of the page.  She may be best able to answer some of your queries.   Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Jennf   (ABSUK Admin team)

Hi, I’m very sorry for some reason i’m not getting notifications about messages on this forum (will try and sort that). I agree with JennF about contacting Krissie, she is very helpful. I don’t believe you have anything to worry about as I was part of the program nearly a year after the fire. I was also burned 20% on my arms, feet, legs, neck and face – so similar situation. If I can be of any help please don’t hesitate to get in touch 🙂

Hi Suzyboo,

Sorry you weren’t able to join the Live Chat last Wednesday but as you know, we’re live every Wednesday, 7.30-9.00pm, so hopefully you can join again soon.
With regard to your query about the Katie Piper Foundation Rehabilitation Centre, it would be best for you to contact them directly.  As far as I’m aware, with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Rehab Centre is closed.  You can check their website for more information or call their burn survivor support line, 0300 365 0055 and someone should be able to assist you with your query.

Thanks for visiting the Adult Burn Support UK forum.
Kind regards,

Jennf
